The moon orbits the earth once a month and eclipses occur if it lines up exactly with the earth and the sun. On Wednesday 11th August 1999 at 10:30am British Summer Time, the shadow of the new moon was cast across the earth, causing a total eclipse of the sun which on average takes place once in several hundred years. The phenomenal event was visible from parts of southern Britain, central Europe, the Middle East and Asia. |
